About the Teaching Program
The research and teaching in the Ecology, Evolution and Behavior teaching program focus on understanding the evolutionary, ecological and behavioral processes and models which function in organisms, populations, societies and ecological systems on land, sea and in lakes. The teaching program deals especially with the interactions between organisms and their environments, systematics, diversity of species, evolution and paleontology, environmental protection and research into the development and evolutionary-ecological connection of behavior mechanisms. The various researches include practical work in the “field” and laboratory, through use of analytical tools and advanced methods, as well as theoretical work, through use of mathematical and statistical tools and a multidisciplinary combination of approaches.
Admission requirement for MSc Studies in the teaching program is a minimum average of 85 in a BSc in Life Sciences at the Hebrew University or another university. Holders of a BSc degree not in Life Sciences will be required to take supplementary studies, as determined by the head of the teaching program or the teaching program admissions committee, which will be appointed by the head of the program. This committee will also consider applications for admission by students who hold a BSc degree from other academic institutions. In special circumstances a full year will be required, during which students are required to take supplementary courses and obtain a minimum average of 85 in them, as a precondition for admission to the teaching program. Supplementary courses will not be counted in the total of points required for the MSc degree.
Supervisor(s): Every student must have at least one supervisor (but not more than two) from among the academic faculty who are members of the teaching program. The second supervisor may be a researcher from outside the teaching program. Choice of the subject of the thesis will be made with the approval of the supervisor(s), ensuring that the work corresponds with the requirements of the faculty. The work must be based on one or more of the following types of research: experiment, observation, data analysis and theoretical research (modeling).
Scope of the studies for the MSc is 30 credits.
Students’ final grade for the degree will be determined after assessment of the final thesis. The components of the overall grade are the weighted grade in the courses (40%), the final thesis grade (30%) and the grade of the MSc exam (30%).
